The Nonmetallic Inorganic Materials group is part of the Department of Materials at the ETH-Zürich. We provide education and perform research on the chemical, physical, and technical aspects of ceramic materials.
The group is headed by Ludwig J. Gauckler and consists of Materials Scientists, Chemists, Physicists, and Mechanical Engineers.
We do research in four areas: Functional ceramics, structural ceramics, colloidal chemistry for ceramic processing and modelling - from the atomistic level to the continuum.
We educate our students on undergraduate and graduate level on the synthesis, processing, properties and application of ceramic-based materials that exhibit useful functions.
We help students to achieve an excellent level of expertise in material science that allows them to learn on their own and to cope with the challenges in their future. We provide an environment of intense learning and excellence in research in an international network.
We cooperate with research groups and industry all over the world.
The experimental facilities of the group complement those of our department and other ceramic research groups in Switzerland.
